What is EFT?

What is it?

The emotional freedom technique (EFT or Tapping) is an alternative treatment for emotional distress, or stress. It can be used to slow down the autonomic nervous system so you can reprogram your thoughts.

It operates under the same principles as acupuncture and acupressure but is quite simple to learn to do on your own and can offer immediate results.

However, haven’t found many other people with narcolepsy that use EFT to manage their symptoms.  For me, it has been one of the most important practices I have come to rely on.

What does it do?

When I feel low frequency emotions like fear, shame, and guilt, they really aggravate my ability to function.  I get more brain fog, my sleepiness level increases drastically, and I am much more likely to experience cataplexy.  While emotionally distressed, I tend to have physical pain like headaches, and if it is extended, I end up catching a cold or other virus and dragging out my misery.  By using the Emotional Freedom Technique, I am able to let go of lower vibe emotions quickly and regain my ability to function at my normal level.

How does it work?

In simple terms, tapping uses the principles of acupressure, combined with modern psychology to get to the emotional source of many physical symptoms.  It slows down the body’s automatic response to danger so that you can emotionally process what is actually going on. If that sounds complicated, I apologize, it is quite simple and actually has very few steps.

Do I need to see a professional?

Not necessarily. You can begin tapping on your own if you want, and see how it goes.  A professional is trained to guide you to find the root cause of the symptom you are treating and remove it as quickly and as permanently as possible. But if you are patient and persistent you can figure out a lot of things on your own.

There is also a really useful App from “The Tapping Solution” that will walk you through the process.

Some people may choose to see a professional for a session or two before going on to practice on their own.  I am now a certified practitioner and use EFT consistently in my daily life.

My goal is to guide other people with narcolepsy to learn to use this powerful tool to reduce the severity of their symptoms.  If you are curious about what EFT is, check out the links below. If you are ready to jump right in, let’s go through a session together!
